Older model pictures – conversions

About 50 years ago I discovered Hansa models. I bought quite a few. That included several copies of the British ASW frigate Whitby. The Whitby was a very successful design. It formed the basis for the follow up Rothesay class, and modified versions of the Whitby were sold to several other countries, mostly Commonwealth nations.

The pictures that follow show different views of models of  some of those modified ships. I took the basic Hansa Whitby model and cut off some parts, and added others, to create the versions  sold to other countries. The final touch, however, was being able to paint them in accurate colors.  I actually visited a couple of the ships, and asked for, and received, a small glass jar with a sample of their paint, both hull and deck.. The pennant numbers came from Janes Fighting Ship and were added by hand with a black ink drawing pen, There were no felt tips back then. I also bought a small container of white ink for the same usage. The white ink was also used for the lettering on the helicopter pads.

The main difference I had to deal with was that the various countries all used different air search radars and some had a few other minor structural differences. I was very pleased with the results, I was never as good a photographer as I was a model maker, but you can still see the results in the following photos.
